Ilarion Merculieff

Event Details

  • Date:
  • Venue: Red Barn Classroom/ Point Reyes National Seashore

This event is part of our ongoing Geography of Hope: Ancestors & the Land Series. Co-presented with Point Reyes National Seashore Association

Ilarion Merculieff was raised in the traditional Aleut way where he was never told what to do or how. The responsibility of adults was to expose him to self-learning experiences. He was expected to watch, listen and ultimately learn, using what the Aleut call the "true intelligence of the real human being".  In this way young people are taught not by instruction but rather by practices of observation, encouragement and the cultivation of curiosity. Ilarion will share stories from his childhood and teachings about the importance of this kind of experiential learning. He will also discuss rites of passage and how they create rhythm and connection for children, parents and communities. Families and all ages are welcome.

Ilarion (Larry) Merculieff has more than 40 years experience serving his people, the Unangan (Aleuts) and other indigenous peoples locally, nationally, and internationally. He is a passionate advocate for indigenous rights/wisdom and fostering a harmonious relationship with the Earth. Ilarion is the co-founder of the Indigenous Peoples’ Council for Marine Mammals, the Alaska Forum on the Environment, the International Bering Sea Forum, and the Alaska Oceans Network. He is a strong voice advocating for the meaningful application of traditional knowledge and elder wisdom when dealing with modern day challenges. With clarity of mind, heart and spirit, Ilarion delivers a timeless message that offers insight and meaning today, and for future generations. He is co-author of: Stop Talking: Indigenous Ways of Teaching and Learning and the author of Wisdomkeeper: One Man’s Journey to Honor the Untold Story of the Unangan People
